Anti-authoritarianism is a Patriotic Duty

We ought to be free. I grew up believing that Americans had freedom as part of their deal with their government. I took it as a given that I could, with my vote and participation in politics, have a part in the affairs of my nation and in my own destiny. I came to understand that democracy is the basis for political freedom and that political freedom is the basis for social freedom and economic opportunity. I understood that democracy supported a culture of fairness and inclusion, leveling the proverbial playing field for everybody. I watched as my democratic nation grew and adapted and changed to become ever more close to these principles and I liked what I saw.

I have recently seen my nation move away from these precious values and watched as authoritarians have weakened my democracy and undermined my nations culture. Fairness is not mentioned today at all, indeed it's fashionable to be unfair and to gain from taking unfair advantage, and to take away for oneself, consequences be damned. I have watched these authoritarians insist that they alone are the important stakeholders in the economy and political life of my nation and have watched these people plunder my economy, government, Treasury, nation, and culture for their own self-indulgence. These people have become, rather quickly, fascists.

Now back in power in my House of Representatives I watch them turn their authoritarian appetites on women's reproductive rights, the rights of free assembly and collective bargaining, our Public Radio system (a source of unbiased and good journalism not taint-able by money), and an attempt to make fair access to health care. I see plainly that the issues here are ones of power and control (even in their attempts to deny funding and access to health-care, where $Billions in financial sector profits are also at stake.) We, the people, are the focus here, and the authoritarian urge is to have us as powerless and captive as possible. Oh, they claim they're simply saving money, to support tax cuts to themselves, but it's about power for them, and powerlessness for the rest of us.

That is the authoritarian agenda. They cannot resist their urges. We, however, can. We must understand what authoritarianism is and where it leads, and we must oppose it for being anti-democratic and anti-American. It is in everbody's best interest that we simply say, No, to these authoritarians; as above, it's even in their best interests in the long run. We can still put them in their place as being no more, or less, than any of us all, and we can simply decline to submit to their urges. Too, we are wise to learn to identify them and keep them away from the power they crave; they are not capable of the awesome responsibilities and self-sacrifices leadership and power demand. Let us not forget that authoritarian governments, and organizations, always end, and that they always end badly, even for the authoritarian. Let us not be shy about Just Saying No to their demands and about declining to indulge their urges. We owe it to the USA to do this. Anti-authoritarianism in the American way.

The events in Egypt offer hope for democracy. Let's not let our nation descend into totalitarian authoritarianism and fascism. There might yet be hope for us, there might still be time. Or, do we simply do nothing and lose our freedoms, democracy, prosperity, and hope for a better future? We can Just Say No, people. Authoritarians require our complicity and compliance. We can simply decline to surrender. Before it's too late.

The events in Egypt offer hope for democracy.

So did the events in Iran, how did that work out?

Let's not let our nation descend into totalitarian authoritarianism and fascism.

Agreed, we must kick the "Progressives" (read Statists) to the curb as soon as is possible.

And by the way... we do not live in a democracy. We do not live in a Democratic Republic, nor a Constitutional Democracy, we live in a Constitutional Republic, using the democratic process.

The forces of authoritarianism won over the forces of democracy in Iran. It appears that violence and oppression - authoritarianism - will succeed in oppression the people in Bahrain, as well. You, apparently, are part of the problem. You are wrong about so many things, but primarily you are mistaken to assume that you have any power over me. Screw the authoritarians, and if that includes you, screw you, too.

The Greatest Good for the Greatest Number. Up with democracy. Down with fascism. It's Saturday; have you told an authoritarian to @!$%# Off yet today?

It's part of the authoritarian dogma that America is not a democracy. This choice of premise follows from the need to dominate. In a democracy everybody has one vote, and no vote is worth more than any other. That truth, and that system, is repugnant to the authoritarian; they claim that power resides with them, alone. They are, naturally, anti-democratic, and thus, anti-American. There is no good, sustainable substitute for democracy, folks. Totalitarianism must fail, that simply cannot be otherwise.

Authoritarians want all the power. Don't give it to them. Just Say No.

Better Careful, I will stand beside you. Some of the rats are beginning to leave the ship and someone must start baling and patching the hull so that the State remains to float.

Many old time legislators seem to be resigning or leaving by vote. I shouldn't pick on them for I don't have all the facts but it seems cowardly for them to leave allowing the mess they have helped make to remain. I also wonder how many are leaving because of the openess now available to the people and they are afraid of getting their hands caught in the cookie jar.

It is good to hear voices for human dignity and freedom coming from all over.

Thank you for that. It's our power to give away, or not to give away. Tell the authoritarians to @!$%# off. They dare not use violence widely in the USA, at least not yet. Let's not let them take us there. Authoritarianism is a pathology, I'm convinced, a personality disorder. It is regressive; today's demands for an authoritarian "fix" will quickly become stale, and the cure for tomorrow will demand more, will require a stronger fix. This dynamic is inherent in the personality; we're very wise, indeed, to understand this and to counter it early.
